How To Build A Waterfall

By Dan Eskelson The number one, most asked question that I receive about water features is "How do I build a waterfall?" The first advice I give is to visit natural waterfalls or at least look at photos. Don't try to memorize just how they look...just get a general idea how the water flows around and over the rocks. The design of your falls will depend on topography, pump and pipe size, length of water flow from pump to falls, pond size and possibly other site-specific factors. If your pond is just 4' x 6', you certainly don't want a large, three foot wide falls - keep the elements of your water feature in scale. One of the most common mistakes results from the desire for a tall waterfall at a level building site...large amounts of soil are imported to build the falls up to a three or four foot height. Yes, you will achieve a dramatic waterfall, but the total effect will look more like an out of place volcano. A falls of just two feet will produce a very satisfactory effect both visually and audibly. On a level site, with an "average" size pond of 11' x 16', the amount of soil needed to surround the biological filter and create the berm is just about equal to the amount of soil excavated from the pond...it works out quite well. To further enhance or enlarge the berm, you may want to import a little more soil, large boulders or other features. If you are working on a slope, you have the option of placing the biological filter (waterfall source) uphill from the pond and creating a series of cascading waterfalls. This is how I built my falls, described in the photo essay here: http://clearwaterlandscapes.com/pondphotos.htm It was definitely an exercise in visualization to determine exactly how the water would flow down the falls. I made a slight underestimation of the total flow and could have widened the falls somewhat, but the effect is very acceptable. Even on a level site, it's a good design strategy to place the falls six to eight feet from the pond. This will create a short stream to the pond. Be sure to use a wide EPDM rubber liner under the falls and/or stream...this will allow for twists and turns in the course of the water and also contain splashing. A ten foot wide stream liner is recommended. Underlayment under the falls and stream liners is usually not required. When your excavation is complete for the falls, and liner is in place, add your stone. Don't be in a hurry - try several (or many) combinations and visualize how the water will flow. When satisfied with your arrangement, use black waterfall foam to direct the water over the stone instead of under it. That is, stone that is directly in contact with the liner should sit on a bed of foam so the water goes around or over the stone instead of underneath it. Caution - the foam expands greatly...don't use too much! Though it requires some creativity and patience, building a waterfall is extremely satisfying. Though you should give some time to preliminary research, you'll learn most by actually building your water feature - just do it! By Sue And Chuck DeFiore In the past, purchasing ad space was the solution to every entrepreneur's marketing challenge. Then it was direct mail, followed by telemarketing. But with advertising and postage costs on the rise, these tactics have lost some of their appeal.
Today the competition is fierce for a customers' attention. In order to compete, you need to employ take-it-to-the-customer techniques. Some of these techniques can include attending trade shows, seminars, and sending them to your website.
You want to promote your business and in doing so you want to maximize referrals and conduct effective public relations campaigns. The following are five sure-fire, inexpensive marketing methods:
1. Be an expert. Don't overlook your most accessible source of promotion: yourself. Give speeches to industry groups, colleges and community organizations, or offer workshops at conferences and business expos. Provide sign-up sheets or marketing materials for potential customers. Also, be a reference for customers, clients, vendors and related businesses by circulating relevant information and providing contacts. After all, home-based businesses thrive on a steady stream of referrals from clients.
For those of us in the lease purchasing business, this means writing articles for publication. Don't make it difficult, write about the deals you've done. Give speeches at local real estate clubs on lease purchase. Network with local groups (accountants, mortgage brokers, financial planners, etc.). Operate your lease purchase business as we do, as a business, and referrals will come to you, rather than you chasing the deals.
2. Create a press kit. Getting quoted in the media or having an article written about your business is a great and inexpensive way to target your market. Watch for trends that you can tie your business into. Your press kit should include a profile of your company, biographies of its principals, product fact sheets and testimonials from customers. Make a list of trade magazines, local newspapers, and radio and TV stations to which you can send short releases on new products, deals, awards or special events.
Again, for those of us operating a lease purchase business, become the local expert in lease purchasing. Offer to write articles. Be sure to do a press release when you start your business, and distribute it to the local newspapers. If you run a group meeting, seminar, or any type of special event be sure to send a press release to the local papers, radio and television stations. Send out follow up letters after your deals are completed to get testimonials, and keep a journal of your deals.
3. Circulate newsletters. Newsletters are a great way to showcase your company's expertise and keep your name in front of prospective clients on a regular basis. They show that you are not just a salespersonyou are an expert with important information to offer. Develop a mailing list of clients and send copies of your newsletter quarterly.
Again, for those of us in lease purchasing a newsletter can be the perfect vehicle to use as a follow up piece to send to sellers, tenant buyers and investors.
4. Network. You'll save money by selling through trade or professional groups. Swamped with running the daily operations of your business, you may feel you have little time to give. But you'll learn about sales leads by joining groups of like-minded individuals. Also, serve on the boards of community organizations, and host house parties tied to your businessyou can hire students from cooking or catering schools or work out an arrangement with a local restaurant to keep costs down.

5. Form alliances. There are several ways you can band together with complementary enterprises to reduce costs and increase business opportunities. Some involve complex legal paperwork, such as a joint venture or a strategic alliance. For instance, as a contractor, you might partner with two other companies to win a bid. Another type of alliance is a consortium, where a group of companies with different specialties share their services; for example, a consulting firm teaming with a graphic artist and a photographer to create brochures and other marketing materials.

That is simply not true, just because you are aging, does not mean you have to suffer from depression as well. Since many of the symptoms that accompany depression can limit ones ability to perform even daily care tasks, factor that in with the similar problems that come with aging, and many of those adults end up needing help in caring for themselves. So, if you are a senior citizen, it is important that you find ways to deal with your depression before it impacts your life, especially if you value your independence. Another scientific study shows that elderly people who often have symptoms of severe depression for at least a six year time period are at a much greater risk of being diagnosed with cancer sometime in the near future. Not only are you more prone to develop cancer, leaving your depression untreated can also put you at risk for developing Alzheimers disease, which is the reason that many seniors end up in skilled care facilities each year. The physician should work with the patient to help find the best treatment plan, so they can start feeling normal again. You are the best judge of how you feel, and your doctor cannot help you if there is a communication problem. They take the information that you give them, and combine that with test results to try to come to a diagnosis and treatment plan. By Richard Kearns I have been researching my family tree for several decades and a few days ago I received a recently published book that contained a photograph of a granduncle and his family. The caption recorded his wifes name as Mary Brown. However, my records show that her name was Eliza Smith. How do I uncover the truth? Perhaps you have run into a similar problem in your research? What steps should you take to try to avoid a similar situation? We will try to address some of these issues and help you in your quest to discover your family tree. When researching my family tree, I have learned to follow a few simple rules to ensure that my documents are as accurate as possible. Id like to say that I have always followed these simple rules. But unfortunately, I had to learn most of these things the hard way. Dont be discouraged if you have to make some changes in order to improve your techniques. Use these suggestions as a guide, but develop your own system to document your research and improve your record keeping skills. By all means, use the things that work and modify the things that dont. Here are a few simple tips: Record the details of each research effort including the surname your are following, the location and dates of the interview or research session, and who you were interviewing on the top of each note or article; Record the citation next to each specific fact that the citation supports. As an example - a copy of the Birth Certificate can be used as the citation for each of the following facts: full name; birth date; and place of birth for an individual. Dont include this citation for other facts about the person such as the marriage date and place or childrens names; Record the citation information immediately and as completely as possible. There is nothing worse than remembering the book you found the fact in and that it had a red cover but not knowing the title, author, and publisher. It is also important to specifically reference the chapter and page that you found where you found the reference; Make sure that the computer program you choose to use allows detailed citations and allows you to specify the facts that the citation documents; Carefully file all documents, charts, newspaper articles, photocopies, etc. in binders and file folders by surname. Be sure to carefully number and cross reference each item so that you can find it again; and Set up a library of the books and records that you collect. Store the items carefully so that you can easily recover them when the need arises. Clearly marking your source citations will help you have a better idea as to which fact is correct. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to prove or disprove all the facts that you uncover. Like the example above, it may take months to discover whether my original information was correct or that the book is right. But knowing where I uncovered my original facts and being able to retrace each of my steps will provide me with a good chance to prove or disprove one or the other facts. Genealogy is a challenging hobby that can be very rewarding. However, it is just as important to properly document your research as it was to make the find in the first place. Chances are youre not in a position to quit your existing job. Due to flexible class schedules youll still be able to work and keep that income. Student loans or grants are a possibility to pay for tuition. Also, check if your company has a tuition reimbursement plan. Even though youre thinking about leaving your job, your company may have a need for the career youre interested in training in. The bottom line is if you dont feel satisfied with your current job, you dont have to stay with it for the rest of your working years.
